MONDAY – July 9

Registration and Photos / GH Lobby / 8:00 – 8:35 am  

 

Introduction to the Academy / GH 204 / 8:45 – 9:35 am

A quick overview of the week, led by Michele Day, John Gibson and the NKU mentors. A chance to quickly get to know everyone, and talk about what we will be doing for the week.

 

Write Your Bio / GH 235 / 9:45 – 10:30 am

Students will write their bios, which will then be posted to the web later and used as an introduction to the work you will be doing.

 

Camera Demo / GH 235 / 10:40 – 11:00 am

John Gibson will give a very quick demo for the cameras we will be using this week in the camp.

 

Photography Basics / GH 235 / 11:10 – 11:50 am
Bruce Crippen, professional photographer, will lead this session on the basic elements of photography.


Group Photo / GH Lobby / 12:00 – 12:10 pm

 

Lunch / Student Union / 12:10 – 1:10 pm

 

Tech of the Day / GH 204 / 1:15 – 1:40 pm

John Gibson will discuss the use of cloud storage for sharing images and material, with a focus on Dropbox and Google Drive. Students will learn how to quickly send a shareable or downloadable link of their photo materials.

 

Campus Photo Shoot / All Over Campus / 1:40 – 2:40 pm
Students and Mentors split into groups for team photo scavenger hunt.  Each team will submit their favorites on Instagram.

Telling Stories with Media / GH 204 / 2:50 – 3:35 pm
Students will meet with Michele Day and NKU mentors to discuss the basics of storytelling. During this time, the NKU mentors will select their favorite photos from the photo scavenger hunt.

 

Photo Debrief / GH 255 / 3:45 to 4:30 pm

John Gibson and the photo editors will discuss why they enjoyed select photos.

 

TUESDAY – July 10


Media Ethics and Media Literacy / GH 235 / 8:30 – 9:15 am

Stacie Jankowski and Sam Rosenstiel discuss news values and digital formats.

 

Tech of the Day / GH 235 / 9:15 – 9:35 am

A discussion of Voice Memos (iphone) and Voice Recorder (Samsung), used for recording audio. McLuckie, Nate & Sam

 

Interviewing Techniques / GH 250 / 9:45 – 11:15 am

Learn the strategies reporters use to get the best quotes. Michele Day will lead a discussion that will help prepare students for the press conference they will have later that day. Anna Wright will then join us to chat about a few topics of interest for the press conference that later in the afternoon.

 

Shooting Video for a Web Story, Part 1 / GH 255 / 11:25 – 12:15 PM

John Gibson discusses the DNA of a good video story for the web during this first video session.  

 

Lunch / Student Union / 12:15 – 12:55 pm

 

Press Conference / GH 250 / 1:05 – 1:50 pm

NKU President Vaidya will discuss the university in a press conference with students, who will have the chance to ask questions.

 

Writing Workshop / GH 235 / 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Students will create a short written story based on press conference. Focus on lead, having three good quotes, and four paragraphs. (Michele Day)

 

Shooting Video for a Web Story, Part 2 / GH 255 / 3:10 – 3:35 pm

The continuation of the discussion from earlier. Immediately following the presentation, students will conduct a practice interview with another high school student, with the mentors supervising the basics of the shoot.

WEDNESDAY – July 11


Media Ethics and Media Literacy / GH 235 / 8:30 – 9:15 am
Stacie Jankowski discusses SPJ Code of Ethics / Common Pitfalls.

 

Tech of the Day / GH 235 / 9:15 – 9:35 am

A discussion of tech used for the creation of infographics. Sam & McLuckie

 

Prep for Story Assignment / GH 235 / 9:45 – 10:45 am

Prepare final questions for video assignments and plan storyboard for video assignments.

 

You’re on Assignment / Campus / 10:55 – 12:00 pm

Students will split off with mentors and film their stories on campus.

Infographics & Data Visualization #1: An introduction to the concept of data visualization in journalism. (Michelle Vaske) (Media Informatics Lab Room ?)

 

Editing for Story / GH 255 / 3:20 – 4:30

Learn the basics of Adobe Premiere and begin editing your stories.

 

THURSDAY – July 12

Tracy Songer discusses current trends and evergreen issues in media and journalism.

 

Tech of the Day / GH 235 / 9:15 – 9:35 am

A discussion of tech used for social media … HootSuite/Snapchat, Periscope. McLuckie, Chris & Sam

 

Breakout Workshops / 9:45 – 10:15 am

Students have the option to break out into a specific workshop tailored to specific areas in multimedia journalism.

Writing Workshop #2: Go further into detail and depth with further crafting your stories.

Photo Editing: Learn the basics of journalistic photo editing and captioning (Emerson Swoger & Nate Weyman)

Data Visualization #2: An introduction to the concept of data visualization in journalism. (Sam Rosenstiel)

 

Social Media and Engagement with the Audience / GH 235 / 10:25 – 11:30 am

Michael Monks of River City News and Lizzie Kibler, social media specialist at NKU, discuss telling stories on the web, in both long- and short-form.


Lunch / 11:30 – 12:30 pm


Video Editing and Finishing / GH 255 / 12:30 – 2:30 pm

Students will work to complete their video stories.

 

Twitter Scavenger Hunt/ Shoot and Share / Campus / 2:40 – 3:20 pm
(5 senses of NKU — and captions)


Work Time / GH 255 or GH 235 / 3:30 – 4:30 pm

Students are able to use this time to work on anything that is not finished.

 

FRIDAY – July 13

A discussion of favorite podcasts . Sam, Chris, McLuckie and Michele

 

Secrets of Success for High School News Media  / GH 318 / 9:00 – 10:25 am
Dean Hume, adviser for Lakota East High School’s Magazine, which has won multiple national story of the year awards, will lead a discussion on best practices for high school journalists. Topics will include recruiting and keeping a strong staff, developing story ideas, incorporating new technology, establishing strong business practices, working with school administrators and understanding the legal guidelines for high school publications.

 

Meet the Pros / GH 250 / 10:30 – 11:20 am
Media professionals and current NKU media students discuss their experiences.  (Scott Wartman & Abby Anstead)

 

Final Reflections / GH 235 / 11:25 – 12:00 pm
High school students reflect on what they’ve learned this week. Take a final survey.
