Alyssa Appelman, Ph.D.

Job title: Assistant Professor at Northern Kentucky University

Discipline/Program: Journalism Program

Areas of expertise: Copy Editing and News Writing

I just finished my first year as an assistant professor at NKU. I teach courses in journalism and mass communication, and I conduct research projects on the cognitive and perceptual effects of news style. I am particularly interested in perceptions of message credibility, and I also analyze reader-engagement in digital and print media. I share the results of my research projects with other academics and practicing journalists. I received my bachelors and masters degrees in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and my doctoral degree in mass communication from The Pennsylvania State University.

I used to work in print media as a copy editor, proofreader and page designer. In college, I interned at The Washington Times and The Washington Post, following training at my college newspaper (University of Missouri’s Columbia Missourian) and my high school newspaper (Parkway Central High School’s Corral). I then worked for Freedom Communications for two years as a copy editor and page designer on a consolidated/hub news desk for publications across the Florida Panhandle: Apalachicola Times, Crestview News Bulletin, The Destin Log, Gulf Defender, Holmes County Times—Advertiser, Northwest Florida Daily News, (Panama City) News Herald, Santa Rosa Press Gazette, The (Port St. Joe) Star, Walton Sun, and Washington County News. I also worked as a freelance copy editor and proofreader for multiple organizations, including Voices of Central Pennsylvania, the Atlantic Publishing Group, Inc., and Samsung Research America.

What’s your favorite Social Media: why? I like LinkedIn because I can keep in touch with former peers and co-workers. I also like Facebook for chatting with family and friends, and I like Twitter for news.

What’s your dream job: This is my dream job! I get to teach fun classes, and I get to conduct experiments about interesting topics.

One interesting fact: I spent my early teenage years as a vegetarian, and I’ve been vegan for almost 15 years.
