IN DEPTH EVENT SCHEDULE
MONDAY – June 15 – Photo Basics
9 a.m.-9:30 a.m. – Griffin Hall Lobby & 235– The registration table will open at 9 a.m. in the lobby. We’ll also shoot photos for your press
pass and have you complete a pre-workshop survey and bio.
9:30 a.m. 10 a.m.–Introduction to Journalism in the Digital Age Summer Camp – Griffin Hall 204 — Michele Day, journalism faculty.
Introduce yourselves and create a Vine video.
10 a.m. –10:35 a.m. – Working the camera – Griffin Hall 204 – John Gibson, electronic media and broadcasting faculty, will show you how the
cameras work.
10:35 a.m. 10:45 a.m. – Griffin Hall lobby – Group photo.
10:45 a.m. – 11: 30 a.m. – Photo basics – Griffin Hall 204 — Bruce Crippen, professional photographer, will lead this session on the basic
elements of photography and how to gather cutline information to accompany your photos.

12:30-1 p.m. – Lunch in the Student Union
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. – Group A – Instagram shoot and share – Theme: Picture NKU

2 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Group A – Photo editing (GH 235)
Group B – Instagram shoot and share – Theme: Picture NKU
3 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. – GH 204 — Critiquing photos of the day
TUESDAY – June 16 – Interviewing, Writing and Video
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. — How to get people talking – Griffin Hall 204 – Michele Day, Journalism Faculty at NKU
Learn the strategies reporters use to get the best quotes. Prepare questions for press conference.

10:30 a.m.-Noon – Griffin Hall 240 (must confirm location) — Prep for press conference –. Kelly Marksbury from sports communication will
provide background on NKU women’s basketball team – followed by Press conference with Coach Dawn Plitzuweit, and players.
Noon-1 p.m. – Lunch — Pizza in Griffin Hall 240
1 p.m.- 2 p.m. — Attention grabbing leads and stories — Griffin Hall 235 – Michele Day, journalism faculty, and your mentors — Learn how
to write leads and stories that your audience can’t resist. Write a story on the press conference.
2 p.m.-2:45 p.m. – Shooting video for a web story – Griffin Hall 255 — John Gibson, electronic media and broadcasting faculty. Learn what
video shots you need to tell a story and how to get them.
2:45 p.m.-3 p.m. –Practice interviews– Interview NKU student mentors on practice shoot.
3 p.m.-3:30 p.m. – Video viewing — Return to Griffin Hall 255 for viewing video.
WEDNESDAY – June 17 – Video Reporting
9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. – Before the interview – Griffin Hall 204 — Michele Day, journalism faculty, and NKU student mentors – Prepare final
questions for video assignments and plan storyboard for video assignments.
10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. – You’re on Assignment –video shoots. NKU student mentors will accompany students.
Shoot 1 — CINSAM Robotics Camp
Shoot 2 — String Camp
Shoot 3 — Cartooning Under the Sea camp –
Shoot 4 — Science research.
Shoot 5– Anthropology Museum
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Lunch at the Student Union.
12:30-2 p.m. – Griffin Hall 235 – Write and edit your story. Write the text to accompany your video, meet with an editor and post on the web.
2 p.m. -3:30 p.m. – Editing for story – Griffin Hall 255 — John Gibson, electronic media and broadcasting faculty. Learn the basics of Adobe
Premier and begin editing your stories.
THURSDAY – June 18 – Social Media, Role Models & Editing
9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. –Instagram/Vine shoot and share — Theme: Favorite places at NKU.

10:15 a.m.-11: a.m. – Ethical dilemmas for high school journalists– Griffin Hall 204 — Dean Hume, adviser for Lakota East High newspaper and
website, discusses case studies and guidelines for dealing with ethical issues on a high school campus.
11 a.m.- Noon – Telling stories with numbers – Griffin Hall 204 – Austin Lee, communication professor at NKU, leads you through data
visualization.
Noon-1 p.m. – Lunch – Student Union
1 p.m.- 1:30 p.m. – Creating Infographics — Griffin Hall 204 –Austin Lee leads hands-on session.
1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. – Open editing session – Griffin Hall 255. Edit your video with John Gibson and NKU students. If you complete your
video, you can finish up other projects as needed.
FRIDAY – June 19
9:30 a.m. –10:45 a.m. – Secrets of success for high school news media – Griffin Hall 318 — Dean Hume, adviser for Lakota East High,will lead
a discussion on best practices for high school journalists.
10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. –Meet NKU editors and alums – Why are they or did they spend their college years in the newsroom?
11:45 a.m.- 12:30 a.m. — Final reflections – Griffin Hall 235 — High school students reflect on what they’ve learned this week. Take a final
survey. Create a Storify of favorite tweets.
12:30-2 p.m. – Closing festivities – Griffin Hall Digitorium– Parents invited. Presentation of student work, awards – and light lunch.
