MONDAY – July 22

Registration and Photos / GH Lobby / 8:15 – 8:35 a.m.  

Get your photo taken. Complete survey. Sign up for Adobe account.

Introduction to the Academy / GH Lobby & GH 204 / 8:45 – 9:35 am

A quick overview of the week, led by NKU mentors with Michele Day & John Gibson. A chance to quickly get to know everyone, and talk about what we will be doing for the week. 

Write Your Bio / GH 235 / 9:45 – 10:30 am

Students will write their bios, which will then be posted to the web later and used as an introduction to the work you will be doing. 

Camera Demo / GH 235 / 10:40 – 11:00 am

John Gibson will give a very quick demo for the cameras we will be using this week in the camp. 

Photography Basics / GH 235 / 11:10 – 11:50 am
Bruce Crippen, professional photographer, will lead this session on the basic elements of photography.

Group Photo / GH Lobby / 12:00 – 12:10 pm
Bruce Crippen will take group photo.

Tech of the Day / GH 204 / 1:15 – 1:40 pm

John Gibson will discuss the use of cloud storage for sharing images and material, with a focus on Dropbox and Google Drive. Students will learn how to quickly send a shareable or downloadable link of their photo materials. 

Campus Photo Shoot / All Over Campus / 1:40 – 2:40 pm Students and Mentors split into groups for team photo scavenger hunt.  Each team will submit their favorites on Instagram.

Telling Stories with Media / GH 204 / 2:50 – 3:35 pmStudents will meet with Michele Day and NKU mentors to discuss the basics of storytelling. During this time, the NKU mentors will select their favorite photos from the photo scavenger hunt.

Photo Debrief / GH 255 / 3:45 to 4:30 pm

John Gibson and the photo editors will discuss why they enjoyed select photos.


TUESDAY – July 23

 

Media Literacy/ GH 235 / 8:30 – 9:15 am

Steve Bien-Aime, NKU journalism faculty,  discusses news values and digital formats.

Shooting Video for a Web Story, Part 1 / GH 255 / 9:15 – 9:55 am

John Gibson, NKU electronic media faculty,  discusses the DNA of a good video story for the web during this first video session.  

Interviewing Techniques / GH 235 / 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Learn the strategies reporters use to get the best quotes. Michele Day will lead a discussion followed by practice interviews.

Breakout Sessions/ 11:15 – 12:15 p.m.Students have the option to break out into a specific workshop tailored to specific areas in multimedia journalism.
–Social Media for Journalists — GH 235 — Abby Anstead of WCPO TV will help you develop Twitter, Instagram and Facebook posts
— Podcasting — Audio studio — Record a podcast with Ashley Hempfling of B-105 and Aaron Zlatkin, NKU audio instructor
— Live TV News — TV Studio — Wes Akers of NKU will direct a team of students through a mock TV newscast.

Shooting Video for a Web Story, Part 2 / GH 255 / 3:10 – 3:35 pm

The continuation of the interview with another high school student, with the mentors supervising the basics of the shoot. Immediately following the presentation, students will conduct a practice shoot.

WEDNESDAY – July 24

 

Media Ethics and Media Literacy/ GH 235 / 8:30 – 9:15 a.m.
Stacie Jankowski discusses SPJ Code of Ethics / Common Pitfalls.

Prep for Story Assignment / GH 235 / 9:15 – 10:15  a.m.

Prepare final questions for video assignments and plan storyboard for video assignments.
You’re on Assignment / Campus / 10:15 – 12 p.m.

Students will split off with mentors and film their stories on campus. 

Story 1: Preserving Plants in the Herbarium — Mentors
Story idea:  Visit the NKU herbarium where you can interview Professor Maggie Whitson and a student about the process of collecting, preserving and cataloguing the plants of Northern Kentucky. You’ll shoot a

Story idea: As August nears, NKU’s Office of Engagement is planning events from VictorFest to Fresh Fusion. What are the plans for these events and what are the opportunities for clubs and activities on campus.

Story idea: NKU’s women’s basketball team prepares for the season. Players will have group workouts for recording and you’ll be able to interview players.

Newport History Museum Planning/ GH 255 / 3:45 – 4:30

Meet with mentors to plan Newport History Museum stories.. Groups will do photos, infographics, text stories, video or audio.

 

THURSDAY – July 25

Secrets of Success for High School News Media  / GH 318 / 9 – 10:25 a.m.
Dean Hume, adviser for Lakota East High School’s Magazine, which has won multiple national story of the year awards, will lead a discussion on best practices for high school journalists. Topics will include recruiting and keeping a strong staff, developing story ideas, incorporating new technology, establishing strong business practices, working with school administrators and understanding the legal guidelines for high school publications
