MONDAY – June 17 – Photo Basics
9:30 a.m. 10 a.m.–Introduction to Journalism in the Digital Age Summer Camp – Griffin Hall 204 — Michele Day, journalism faculty. NKU students take photos for press passes. Introduce yourselves and create a Vine video
10 a.m. –10:30 a.m. – Working the camera – Griffin Hall 204 – John Gibson, electronic media and broadcasting faculty, will show you how the cameras work.
10:30 a.m. 10:45 a.m. – Griffin Hall lobby – Bruce Crippen will take group photo.
10:45 a.m. – 11: 15 a.m. – Photo basics – Griffin Hall 204 — Bruce Crippen, professional photographer, will lead this session on the basic elements of photography.
11:15- Noon – Lunch in the student Union

Noon-1 p.m. – Group A – Early Childhood shoot – MEP 147

3 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. – GH 204 — Critiquing photos of the day
TUESDAY – June 18
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. — How to get people talking – Griffin Hall 204 – Michele Day, journalism faculty
Learn the strategies reporters use to get the best quotes. Interview each other for profiles.
10:30 a.m.-11 a.m. – Basics of Live Tweeting — BKC – Chris Cole, NKU marketing.
11 a.m.-noon – BKC — Press conference with NKU basketball coach Dave Bezold
Noon-1 p.m. – Lunch — Pizza in Griffin Hall 318
1 p.m.-1:45 p.m. — Attention grabbing leads and stories — Griffin Hall 235 – Michele Day, journalism faculty, and your mentors — Learn how to write leads that your audience can’t resist. Then try your hand at lead writing. How do you organize the rest of the story for the Web? Write your mini-profile.
1:45 p.m.-2:30 p.m. – Shooting video for a web story – Griffin Hall 255 — John Gibson, electronic media and broadcasting faculty. Learn what video shots you need to tell a story and how to get them. Learn about B-roll and how to get it.
2:30 p.m.-3 p.m. – Scavenger hunt for video – NKU student mentors will take students on a video scavenger hunt around NKU’s campus.
3 p.m.-3:30 p.m. — Return to Griffin Hall 255 for viewing video.
WEDNESDAY – June 19
9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. – Before the interview – Griffin Hall 204 — Michele Day, journalism faculty, and NKU student mentors – Prepare final questions for video assignments and plan storyboard for video assignments.
10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. – You’re on Assignment –video shoots. NKU student mentors will accompany students on their video shoots and interviews.
Shoot 1: Gifted and talented camps – Erin Mullins (mentor) – Campbell Hall or MEP
Shoot 2 –NKU Women’s basketball team/camp – Stephen Wilder (mentor) – Location: Regents Hall
Shoot 3 — NKU’s Society of Automotive Engineers profile – Maggie Pund (mentor ) – Location: BC 121
Shoot 4– CinSam Aeronautics camp – Alyson Schoenung (mentor) – Location – SC262
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Lunch at the student union.
12:30-2 p.m. – Griffin Hall 235 – Write and edit your story. Write the text to accompany your video, meet with an editor and post on the web.
2 p.m. -3:30 p.m. – Editing for story – Griffin Hall 255 — John Gibson, electronic media and broadcasting faculty. Learn the basics of Adobe Premier and begin editing your stories
THURSDAY – June 20
9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. –Instagram/Vine shoot and share — Theme: things you didn’t know about NKU.
10:15 a.m.-11:30 a.m. – Secrets of success for high school news media – Griffin Hall 318 — Dean Hume, adviser for Lakota East High School, will lead a discussion on best practices for high school journalism programs. Topics will include recruiting and keeping a strong staff, developing story ideas, incorporating new technology, establishing strong business practices, working with school administrators and understanding the legal guidelines for high school publications
11:30 a.m.-noon – Meet the Northerner editors– Griffin Hall 240 –Kevin Schultz and other Northerner editors share their stories. Why are they spending their college years in a newsroom?
Noon-1 p.m. – Lunch – Student Union
1 p.m.-3:30 p.m. – Open editing session – Griffin Hall 255. Edit your video with John Gibson and NKU students. If you complete your video, you can finish up other projects as needed.
*All videos, text and slideshows should be complete before you leave Thursday.
FRIDAY – June 21
9:30 a.m. –11 a.m. – Ethical dilemmas for high school journalists– Griffin Hall 204 — Dean Hume, adviser for the award winning Lakota East High newspaper and website, discusses case studies and guidelines for dealing with ethical issues on a high school campus.
11 a.m.-noon – Reflections with Vine – Griffin Hall 235 — High school students reflect on what they’ve learned this week. Create a Storify of favorite tweets.
Noon to 1:30 p.m. – Closing festivities – Griffin Hall Digitorium— Parents invited. Presentation of student work – and light lunch. There will be cake!
