Freshmen get a fresh start at NKU

The annual FreshFusion event brings new students closer together

July 25, 2019

FreshFusion is an NKU-sponsored event in a festival type of feel that reels in incoming freshmen to get involved.

AJ Miller has a difficult challenge that he faces at the beginning of every school year. As the coordinator of student engagement at Northern Kentucky University, Miller has a lot on the table with his job. With the help of 10 to 15 co-workers, Miller and his committee start organizing the event in February, months in advance.

“With that many people it’s harder to create an event that satisfies everyone,” Miller said.

How will Miller satisfy all 5,000 people at this event?

A grassy area with a lot of space looking off of Loch Norse is awaiting 5,000 new freshmen at the annual FreshFusion. As a part of the third day of Freshman Orientation, the humid weather looms on the Northern Kentucky campus.

FreshFusion is an event where the fresh air smells like Skyline coneys, Mac’s pizza and Meijer’s sliders. Previous events have included Ziplines and dunk tanks. But the crowds of new faces at the festival are what FreshFusion is all about.

“I like FreshFusion because it kicks off the school year in a fun and unique way,” Miller, a Norse alum himself, said.

Creating such an event takes a magnitude of time to organize and set up. Miller shows his love and passion for NKU by helping these new Norse get comfortable with their new home for the next four years. The committee that helps Miller is also run by a couple of NKU students.

Derrick Holden, a committee member, has helped Miller create Fresh Fusion into what it has become. The rising senior is the student engagement specialist and was also Victor E. Viking, the Norse mascot. Holden is a very engaged student on campus.

“To be able to do what I do, I need to be able to manage my time, but in the end, it’s worth it,” Holden said.

This upcoming school year, FreshFusion will be on Saturday, August 17 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
