Taylor Upchurch

Year: Junior

Double Major: Broadcasting and Journalism

Role: Story Editor

High school: South Ripley High School

“Dad … Mom … can we just stay here forever?” asked a 7-year old toddler as she walked along Northern Kentucky University’s campus after partaking in a thrilling Martina McBride concert.

Taylor Upchurch knew she wanted to be a Norse from her first visit to the concrete jungle.

Even though her first dream was to become the next Martina McBride, she has chosen to support her dreams of someday becoming a news anchor at a local news station with the help of a degree in broadcasting and journalism at NKU.

“I’ve known for a really long time that NKU would be my future home,” says Taylor. “Coming here was the best decision I have ever made. I believe every opportunity that has been offered to me on campus has been a puzzle piece that was missing in my life and education.”

Taylor spent all four years of high school as the feature editor of the newspaper and she loved every second of it. Coming from the small town of Versailles, Ind., her journalism experience was  limited; however, that only encouraged her to search for the many other wonders of the broadcasting world.

Since she has been enrolled at Northern, Taylor has not only gained the ability to binge watch Netflix continuously throughout the day while eating her entire fridge, but she has also been blessed with the opportunity to write for the Northerner and has future plans to join Norse Media in the fall.

“I’m beyond excited to get to know the students who have chosen to be a part of this great journalistic experience,” Taylor said. “I know how enticing it is to walk out with a camera, notepad, and pen and search for the story that everyone wants to read. I’m glad so many are interested in what NKU has to offer. I promise they won’t be disappointed.”

  1. Favorite TV Show and why — This is so hard to answer! I’m going to say it’s a toss up between Friends and King of Queens. Both are obviously so 90’s – early 2000’s, and I think that’s why I love them so much. The humor is priceless, and I spend most of that time watching it looking like a fool considering I’m laughing in a room all by myself!
  2. Favorite Social Media site or blog and why — My favorite social media site is most definitely Instagram. I do enjoy reading articles, but photography fascinates me. I enjoy seeing the fun that people have while taking pictures of their memories, and I most certainly enjoy posting a lot of my own. A picture really does say a thousand words … with the addition of a few hashtags of course!
  3. Memorable moment and why — I’d say my most memorable moment was when I had the privilege of job shadowing Cammy Dierking from Channel 12 News during my junior year of high school. She was fantastic (and incredibly tall.) She had shown me around the set and enlightened me on the life of a news anchor. And even though everything she said about the career path was enticing, there is one moment I will never forget. She said, “You have what it takes to be a news anchor. I can see it in your eyes. You have the glow and the personality. Oh, and I like your makeup. Would you be my personal makeup artist from here on out?” I’ve never been so flattered. Who knew that news anchors could be really humourous like real people? Haha! Yes, I was in celebrity shock mode the entire time.
  4. If there was a movie made of your life what genre would it be and who should play you —  Well, even though I have no romantic interest, my life would definitely be a romance film. I just really love love. It’s so beautiful. Anything Nicholas Sparks brings me pure happiness! And I would have to say that Reese Witherspoon would be a good fit for my role. She can be shy at times, but can be very forward as well, and I would say I’m practically the same.
  5. What’s one thing you’d put on your bucket list and why  — One thing that is on my bucket list is to own a house with a backyard that is entirely made up of flowers, plants and glistening lights. I’d love to dance the night away under the twinkle of the lights without having to leave the comfort of my own home.
